Frankfurt

Frankfurt looks like a prosperous European city based on a medieval past. Huge modern skyscrapers, but not crowded together.

The medieval is largely re-created since the war (the core of the city got flogged), and there are plans for more re-creation. In some places they seem to be tending to the Disney end of the scale, but on the other hand they're re-purposing some old buildings very well. The Archeological Museum is entirely within the shell of a large old church, so the architecture is interesting as well as the contents.

The Archeological Museum, which was the main thing I wanted to see
here, was disappointing. The exhibits are amazing; they have thousands
of items from 9000 BC thru the Roman period and on to church rule (and even some Neanderthal tools), with extensive explanations next to most of them, detailing sources and uses, but all the texts are in German. The only English leaflet just tells which period is in which room. No photography, so I couldn't snap some texts to put into Google Translate. So that's another reason Beverley should be here. The Roman sources are extensive; this area was close to the frontier for 200 years and dozens of sites have been found and excavated over the last 150 years

The History Museum, my other focus, is closed till next year.

My hotel here is fine, no backpackers this one, even marble stairs, but still under 40 euros.

Jetlag is a bit of an issue, or rather it was mid-afternoon, but maybe I was tired because I'd been awake since 6 AM after a 12 hour flight.

Had some interesting snacks for lunch at a street-market near the Haupbahnhof; clearly not intended just for tourists - lots of suits and office ladies tucking in.

Eggs and potato in a highly flavoured sauce. The street food here is so cheap compared to Sydney; a beer for A$1.40, and even McCafe coffee is less than A$3. (Yes I did; I wanted a proper coffee)

Had a pleasant Tuesday evening watching British soccer sitting in a street cafe and enjoying a gelato and some lemon cheesecake, but eventually had to leave because I couldn't stop coughing; there were smokers at other tables, but the smokers are everywhere here, and there's even tobacco advertising in the streets.
